Soykut

Born and raised in Ankara, Turkey, Yücel Soykut began painting in his late teens while pursuing a career as a hairstylist.  After immigrating to Ottawa, Canada in 1971 he became a stylist at the exclusive Rinoldo Hair and Spa then opened his own shop where he became the stylist of then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.  Although he was known as “John the Butcher” by his clientele, he continued with his other passion of painting and gradually built upon a foundation of work over four decades.  Having married and settled in Calgary, Canada, Yücel and his wife raised a family of four beautiful children while continuing with his own hair salons (Split Ends & Senses).  The impact his family has on his collection can be seen in the subjects of his work, many of which include images of his children and his wife.

Artist Statement

I have continually been driven by the curiosities of the make up of all living things. Curiousities about the way living and non-living matter are connected, curious about the sequence of their connectedness, curious about the connection of the sequence of numbers, curious about the visualization of polygons everywhere in the real world, curious about the conceptualist equations in nature and their connectedness to science and philosophy, not to mention a near obsession with oil paint, its properties which allow the oil paint’s colours to act in a fantastical manner, creating shapes and forms which act upon the imagination and senses, bringing a strange new world to life.
